What the insurance covers

  • Treatment for accidents and injuries, such as road accidents, falls, bites and swallowed objects
  • Surgery and hospital stays linked to a covered illness or accident
  • Diagnostic tests and medicines your vet prescribes for that treatment
  • Up to the cover amount you choose, within the policy's sub-limits

What it usually does not cover

  • Pre-existing conditions: anything your dog or cat had, or showed signs of, before the policy started
  • Claims in the waiting period: illness in the first weeks after you buy (the exact period is in the policy)
  • Routine and preventive care: vaccines, deworming, flea and tick treatment, grooming and health check-ups
  • Pregnancy, breeding and birth costs
  • Cosmetic procedures such as ear or tail cropping
  • Food, supplements and diet products, even if a vet suggests them
  • Injury from neglect, cruelty or fighting, or dogs used for racing, guarding or commercial work
  • Dental, behaviour and training costs unless the policy says otherwise

Age limitsInsurers accept dogs and cats within an age range, often from a few months old up to around 8–10 years for a new policy. Your advisor confirms this for your breed.
You may pay part of a claimSome policies have a co-pay or deductible, especially for older animals. It is written in the quote.
